Lyposuction | Liposuction Side Effects

Liposuction side effects definitely do occur as with every surgical procedure involving the introduction of a foreign body (the cannula used for aspiration) and the repeated suction cum injury to the fat cells.  Thus there will be the expected liposuction side effects such as swelling, bruising and temporary numbness and some pain in the just treated areas.  This is however temporary and with extra care such as smaller cannulae and the use of the lyposuction procedure known as tumescent liposuction, the incidence of side effects lessens considerably and whatever liposuction side effects there are disappear faster, taking at the very most a few months to recover.

The skill of the surgeon is very important. This way certain liposuction side effects such as irregularity of the skin surface after lyposuction which may persist can be minimised.

Certain other potential liposuction side effects can occur and are potentially serious.  These are classified into local side effects such as persistent bleeding and shock or anemia due to disruption of major blood vessels, nerve injuries, and perforation of the normal skin in cases of careless procedures.  Even more serious side effects can occur, such as fat embolism where loosened fat globules enter the blood stream and are carried to the heart, which throw off these emboli into the arterial circulation and cause serious problems such as fat embolism, shock, stroke and death.  Persistent bleeding due to the consumption of anti-platelet aggregators to prevent stroke or heart attacks such as aspirin, ticlid or plavix, causing an inability or impairment of the normal clotting mechanism.  Allergic reactions can also occur.  Persistence of swelling in the operated affected area may mean that the compressive bandage meant for the wound has not been utilised properly by wearing.

Mild side effects are easily treated, often requiring no more than some minor painkiller for pain, and time for swelling and numbness to disappear.  Major liposuction side effects such as embolism, allergy and shock obviously need hospitalization and inpatient care in the intensive care unit.
