BERLIN, May 20 — From liposuction in Athens to an eye operation in Dubai, the lucrative market in medical tourism is on the up, tempting ever more countries to look for ways to profit from foreign patient care. 

“Everyone wants their share of the pie,” Sanjiv Malik, director of DM Healthcare, a Dubai-based network of hospitals, said at a recent conference on medical tourism attended by more than 300 professionals here. The “pie” is getting bigger. Nearly three million patients go abroad for medical treatment every year. Turnover is expected to total 100 billion dollars in 2012, compared with 79 billion in 2010, and increase to 130 billion by 2015, according to global consultancy firm, KPMG. 

The flows of medical tourists looking for cheaper and often quicker treatment than they can receive at home are traditionally well defined. Mexico draws US patients, while Thailand, India or Malaysia are the key destinations for Asians, and Hungarian dental care tends to be highly sought-after generally. Germany draws wealthy Russians as well as nationals from the Gulf; well-off Africans go to France for medical care while residents of Latin America go to the US city of Miami. 

Keith Pollard, of the specialist internet site Treatment Abroad, said that, generally speaking, “medical tourism is not global, it’s regional”. 

However a growing number of countries and hospitals are aiming to turn it global. Shopping trip or museum visit included.

In Turkey “the government has taken the initiative to be one of the players” in a market which until now was dominated by the private sector, said Emin Cakmak, head of the Turkish medical tourism committee. 

It has launched a demolition programme of old hospitals replacing them with facilities mostly destined for foreigners, likely to be patients from Arab and Gulf states. Dubai, keen to attract custom from neighbouring countries, has its own “medical zone”. “Dubai was traditionally a country which sent patients (abroad), now it wants to host them,” Enric Mayolas, who manages the Barcelona Centro Medico which seeks to draw in foreign patients for about 20 hospitals in the Spanish city, said. 

But Pollard warned that Dubai’s chances of success could be limited, identifying a problem that was common to other small countries wanting to become medical tourism destinations. “Lots of Arab patients travel to Germany or the UK. Why? Because Germany has an 80 million population, doctors can practice, do research and get grants,” he said. 

Christian Ott-Sessay, of the German hospital group, Vivantes, acknowledges that competition is stiff. “But the market is so big that it’s not competition at the expense of each other,” he said. Vivantes is in the throes of equipping some of its Berlin clinics with “comfort rooms” for foreign patients with hotel staff to take care of their non-medical needs. Berlin has also set up a hotline for visiting patients and especially their families to help them quickly organise non-medical tourism activities such as a shopping trip or visit to a museum. 

Meanwhile, the Athens-based private hospital centre, Hygeia Group, focuses on tourism as a selling point. “Many people will come from Asia because they also want to see the Acropolis,” George Soras, of Hygeia’s marketing service, said. He also said that prices were 70 per cent lower than the rest of the EU or US for cosmetic surgery or artificial limbs. However, the sector faces a raft of potential problems and risks. Complications, ethical questions and the confidentiality of data all have to be taken into consideration, Malik said. Pollard also acknowledged that “the aftercare is lacking”. “We have to fix that if we want medical travel to grow,” he warned. — Afp-Relaxnews

What’s in hot demand?

While Dr Abhijit Desai says main pre-wedding cosmetic procedures are liposuction, breast augmentation, most popular bring liposuction. Dr Rashmi Shetty declares, “Brides go for treatments ranging from simple things like a medically monitored facial which is more pampering, to procedures like lip enhancement, cheek enhancement and a total makeover of the facial contour. The most popular, however, is improving skin health and glow, which becomes more important due to all the stress and running around that they do. Therefore, vitamin infusion via high-pressured, pure oxygen is very popular, along with some skin polishing, peels and brightening masks. Also, a trend that has been on the rise, is brides’ mothers, who want to look their best at their daughters’ wedding – it’s their second chance at being a star.” She also says face contouring is on the rise.

Adds Dr Charu Sharma, “Brides want a lip pout with fillers, botox, peel for cleaning up their face, tightening a loose vagina, laser hair removal and laser for acne and open pores, hymen repair and breast augmentation. Liposuction is a procedure, which can be performed in the areas like abdomen, flanks, hips, thighs, arms and even from the chin and cheeks, through surgical and non-surgical methods. By removing unwanted deposits of excess fat, it improves body appearance and smoothens irregular or distorted body shapes. The results are noticeable and permanent,” she says.

And, it’s not just brides alone, the situation can be fun with the bride-to-be treating her nearest and dearest – including her mother-in-law-to-be – to some spa TLC. During this, aestheticians assess what needs to be done and prescribe quick fixes, including chemical peels or wrinkle-fillers.

Cost, time, no bar…
Dr Shetty says most of the above are day care procedures and one can go back home the same evening depending upon what one undergoes. “That’s why brides prefer these regimens. While vagina tightening takes 45 minutes, laser for hair removal is painless and safe due to the inbuilt deep cooling of the skin. These sittings can be repeated as per the need, from two to six weeks,” she adds. Agrees Dr Desai. “Liposuction and breast augmentation can be day surgeries,” he informs.

CHICAGO, IL — (Marketwire) — 05/16/12 — According to the most recent study from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), more than 9 million cosmetic procedures were performed. Liposuction was the most common procedure performed, having increased nearly 13% from the previous year, followed by breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, blepharoplasty, and breast lift. The ASAPS report also shows an increase in the total number of surgical procedures from 2010-2011, a fact Dr. Braithwaite says holds true at his practice as well: “Compared to previous years, we have seen an increase in both consultations as well as surgical procedures. Much of the increase in popularity at our practice might be attributed to the mild winter and spectacular spring we have had in Chicago, which typically motivates patients to get a jumpstart on their plans for enjoying the warmer weather ahead.”

Despite liposuction claiming the top spot for the first time in three years, the Chicago plastic surgeon says breast augmentation is still the most popular procedure at his office, and believes its continued popularity centers on the impact the results can have on a patient’s body image and overall self-confidence. He adds that breast augmentation results can be extremely satisfying when performed properly, as the recovery period is typically very brief and well-tolerated, and patients are able to enjoy the results for years.

In addition to the continued growth in the number of breast augmentation procedures performed annually, Dr. Braithwaite says he believes the ASAPS statistics also point to the continued success and growth of non-surgical cosmetic enhancement. According to the study, non-surgical procedures accounted for 82% of the total, and have increased 365% since 1997, when these statistics were first collected. An aspiring model who used stolen credit cards to pay for expensive cosmetic surgery to bolster her fledgling career walked free from court today.

Faileigh Cooper, 23, splashed £6,850 on liposuction and lip enhancements with around £4,000 coming from stolen card details she was given by a man she met in a nightclub.

Cooper, who is now two months pregnant, told the court she ‘dreamed of being a model’ and claimed she had no idea the card details she used were stolen.

She also alleged that the surgery had left her with a burnt arm and was considering legal action.

Prosecutors said she was part of a plot with the man she said she knew only as ‘Aaron’ to defraud the Dr Alexandra Chambers Medical and Aesthetic Practice, on Wimpole Street, central London.

The pair were said to have repeatedly called the surgery where Cooper paid a £500 deposit to pay the balance, with around £4,000 coming from the stolen cards.

During the trial, jurors heard Cooper booked her treatment and paid a £500 deposit before paying the rest over the phone using a variety of cards.

Cooper and ‘Aaron’ called the surgery 14 times between February 21 and February 23 last year using both legitimate and fraudulent cards to pay off the balance.

The clinic was later informed that the card payments were fraudulent, leaving them out of pocket.

When asked by her legal team if she had ‘any reason to doubt’ that the cards belonged to ‘Aaron’ she replied: ‘No’.

She described Aaron as ‘very flashy’ and said when she first met him in a club he had been ‘trying to get a lot of attention buying bottles of champagne costing over £200’.

Cooper said: ‘He offered to pay so he would then contact the clinic and pay the full amount.’

She insisted she believed the card did belong to ‘Aaron’, who later told Cooper he was too busy to make the payments and asked her to try for him and supplied the details.

The Judge, Mr Recorder James Mulholland QC, told her: ‘You made a series of false representations to Dr Alexandra Chambers Medical and Aesthetic Practice by using a series of eight cards, many of which did not belong to you.

‘This was a very strange case in many ways.

‘It struck me that it was almost inevitable that you would be apprehended as the surgery had your name and the address at which you resided.

‘But equally the evidence and the jury’s verdict that you would have had to have known through the number of cards, the way they were used, the constant rejections and re-submissions that what you were doing was dishonest cause it just could not have been operated in any other fashion.’

The former House of Fraser and BBC Children in Need model, of Battersea, southwest London, had denied four counts of fraud, was convicted by a jury of four counts of fraud after a five day trial in April.

Cooper was convicted and given a 12 month community order and told to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work.

An application for £4,000 in compensation and a contribution of £1,875 towards prosecution costs was reject on the grounds Cooper’s conviction would see her lose her job and she would have no money to pay.

‘I feel it would be wrong in the circumstance to impose any such order,’ said the judge.

Prosecutor Orla Daly said today: ‘The four convictions for fraud relate to the use of credit cards in order to pay for cosmetic procedures which she was not entitled to use.’

A type of girdle called a faja, considerably more constrictive than the concealing undergarment Spanx, is growing popular in neighborhoods in and around New York City. Many women wear them to push their bodies into an hourglass shape even though they can be so tight that breathing becomes difficult. How far would you go for fashion? In “Rediscovering a Shortcut to an Hourglass Figure,” Sarah Maslin Nir writes:

The fajas comes in a variety of shapes and sizes, from full-body jumpsuits to tight belly bands, for women as well as men. The effects depend on the fabric heft of the fajas; they come in Lycra, cotton, nylon and latex. The less forgiving the material, the more flattering the effect. Prices typically run from $20 to over $70, depending on the fabric and how much of the body it covers.

“There is a Spanish saying, you want to look ‘like a Coke bottle,’ ” said Lilliana Rios, 33, who reflects on the faja on her blog ThingsLatinosLoveorHate.com. “A lot of Spanish songs talk about women with shapes like a guitar, so that’s the curved look that Latina women want.”

Getting the look requires some grit. Tugging on a faja can become a desperate bout of woman versus fabric. Flesh must be coaxed inside, battened down by hooks and, finally, sealed with a zipper that can force the air out of your lungs.

“The first day you can’t stand it,” Ms. Murillo said. “But then it loosens it up.”

Hidden under clothes the results may be sexy, but fajas are not. Most are the color of an Ace bandage and resemble body casts. Some are configured to squeeze certain areas and leave others to jiggle.

A super-tight girdle traditionally worn after liposuction surgery is enjoying a revival among New York’s style set.

The faja, originally created more than 50 years ago in Colombia, works like a corset that shifts a woman’s organs and flesh in order to create the much-coveted hourglass silhouette made popular in recent years by Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks.

But unlike other popular shapewear on the market, many believe that the restrictive garment is too extreme for daily use.
